WHY THE NAME FOLLOWERS
Originally, Christians were first referred to as, “followers of the way.” This alluded to a way of living that Jesus and His followers had become known for, a way of living that actually helped people learn about God, or find Him, while demonstrating how to follow Him. That’s what we want to be known for at Followers Church. Over everything else, we want to be known as followers of Jesus by the way we live our lives, and in doing so, to help others find and follow Jesus.
WHAT WE BELIEVE
God // Father, Son and the Holy Spirit | We believe that there is one God who has eternally existed in three separate persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. We acknowledge God as the one true creator who alone is worthy of our worship.
Jesus // The Son of God | We believe that Jesus lived a sinless life, ministered to hurting people, and that he died on a cross for our sins. We affirm that three days after his death, Jesus was raised back to life.
Holy Spirit // Gods transforming presence | We believe that the Holy Spirit is God’s personal, transforming, empowering presence. We affirm that every believer receives the Spirit at salvation. However, we also believe that we must continually be filled by the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18), and that the evidence of His filling is power to be a follower.
The Bible // The Holy Scriptures | We affirm that the Bible, both Old and New Testaments, are God’s inspired Word and therefore base all of our messages, trainings, and classes on it’s principles and doctrines.
The Church // The People of God | We believe that the Church consists of those who’ve trusted in Jesus and have been saved by grace through faith alone. We can’t earn His grace through religious activity or trying to be good enough. We affirm that all believers are called to be followers who make disciples while in the process of being transformed into Jesus’ image and character.
Mankind // People | We believe that all people are lost in their sins and need to be saved by God’s epic grace. God offers grace, redemption and restoration to all who confess their sin and seek His mercy and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. Regardless of whether or not a person is a follower of Jesus, they must be afforded compassion, love, kindness, respect, and dignity. Hateful and harassing behavior or attitudes directed toward any individual are to be repudiated and are not in accord with the doctrines of the Bible.
Marriage // Sexuality | We believe that marriage joins one man and one woman in a single, exclusive union, as delineated in the Bible. We believe that God intends sexual intimacy to only occur between a man and a woman who are married to each other. We believe that God has commanded that no intimate sexual activity be engaged in outside of a marriage between a man and a woman. We also affirm that any form of sexual immorality, such as adultery, fornication, homosexuality, bisexual conduct, bestiality, incest, pornography or any attempt to change one’s sex, or disagreement with one’s biological sex, is wrong and breaks the heart of God.
