FAQ’S |
Q: Who is La Mision?
A: La Mision was founded in 2009 by Dr Tito Palacios after having done similar work for another organization for a number of years. The La Mision team is made up of Guatemalan doctors, dentists, administrative staff and long-term missionaries from the US. They have a heart for serving and reaching the lost in their own home country and invite teams and interns from all over the world to join them.
Q: When/how long is the trip?
A: The trip is 10-12 days in either April or August.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: Between $2500-$3000. Exact costs vary from year to year due to fluctuating transportation costs and the number of team members.
Q: What will we do?
A: We show the love of Jesus by caring for the physical needs of some of the most underserved people in the country. We will help run medical, dental and vision clinics, provide portable water filters, pray and give food and/or clothing, play with children and give lots of smiles and hugs! We will also visit the school that La Mision runs in the village of Sarita, where we’ll hear about their sponsorship program, help with projects around the school, spend time with the children. Team members who sign up to sponsor a child prior to the trip can meet their sponsored student in person! Followers Church is generally the last team of the summer season and we try to plan an extra “fun” day to experience more of the beautiful country of Guatemala with our La Mision family!
Q: I don’t have any medical experience; can I still serve?
A: Absolutely! No medical experience or knowledge is required. There are lots of way to serve in the clinics; you just need to be willing and able to learn. We expect all team members to be all-in followers of Jesus, who are living out their faith HERE and NEAR and are ready to go FAR.
Q: Are there any age requirements?
A: Children under 18 will be considered but must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
Q: What are the physical requirements?
A: Team members must be able to sit for hours at a time (2.5-3 hour flights, 8-10 hour van rides), handle high temperatures in extreme humidity (“feels like” temps can reach 120*+), ride in the back of a pickup truck for up to 2+ hours over rough terrain, or ride in the back seat of a truck in tight spaces while carrying equipment, backpacks, etc. over the same roads. Some roles in the clinics require standing for long periods. Delivering water filters can require walking/hiking in the heat of the day for 1-2 miles.
Q: Do I need any shots to travel to Guatemala?
A: La Mision recommends the Hepatitis A & B series, as well as Tetanus. Any additional immunizations are up to the individual team members and their doctors.
Q: How do I sign up?
A: Click the Application link above! Applications will be reviewed by the team leader and pastor. Upon notification of acceptance, you’ll have 30 days to submit your non-refundable deposit to secure your spot (amount TBD).
Q: How many people are on the team?
A: We cap the teams at 13 people and 3 spots are reserved for the team leader, pastor and photographer, so that leaves 10 open spots. We will accept applications for a wait list in case any spots open up.
Q: What else should I know?
A: We are known for our readiness and willingness to serve in whatever capacity is needed. We meet several times prior to the trip to spend time getting to know each other, serving together and talking about what to expect, what to pack, etc. Plan on participating in these team meetings that will take place over several months prior to the trip. In addition, the team is prayed over during Followers Church services on the Sunday prior to the trip, and we will have a final team send-off/packing party that all team members are required to attend.
